New Workflow
Austin Lane
I migrated everythigng over to the mini PC and now I’m reworking the whole workflow for creating and publishing posts.
After some trial and error wit the previous post I did manage to get a shortcode plugin working that processed a directory of images and made some really slick image galleries. The main issue was that I couldn’t seem to find any options that worked off remote images (i.e. my MediaGoblin server), everything requires them to all be inside the Hugo content directory to process during publishing. I get that they need the files for generating thumbnails, but it’s annoying because I have to now create post directories with gallery subdirectories, as opposed to a single .md
file with the post name insides /post
.
Copying a bunch of images up was also a pain because I had to get them into a directory on my raspberry pi. This all made my original solution with FlatNotes too much of a pain, so I’ve abandoned that and switched to a network share directory that I can access in my file browser. That makes copying over a bunch of files trivial, and I can just edit the markdown files with MacDown or whatever else works. The main change needed was altering n8n
to connect to the blog host, create a new directory based on a post name, and copy a template into the directory as a starter for the post. The only remaining hitch is that it doesn’t format it quite right, but I’ll figure that out.
The reason for migrating everything off of the raspberry Pi was to try out Stellarmate or one of the other Astrophotography OS solutions that can control cameras and guide scopes. I’m having a blast with a simple star tracker but I know I can get longer exposures if I get a guide scope going.
The migration process itself was pretty painless. I used rsync
to copy over my /stacks
directory where I set up all my persistent volumes, and since I was running everything through Portainer it meant I could simply migrate each stack and it would just show up on the other host. Once I did that to all the running jobs I just deleted everything on the Pi. There was a brief hiccup with DNS going non-responsive, but that was an unrelated issue to the migration.
Todo list:
- Figure out appropriate image sizes, the ones in that gallery are all 20+ MB.
- Do I need to scutter MediaGoblin and just put all my images local to Hugo now?
- Keep exploring other image display options, maybe something for a big single image I wanna show.
- Update my reading list progress.
Reading:
- Still working on The Man Not. It is pretty dense, academic reading, and honestly a heavy subject. I don’t find myself wanting to pick it up every night. Maybe I need to find some lighter reading in between chapters so I’m not just watching camera reviews on Youtube every night.
